I was looking forward to this race! This was my 3rd attempt to reach my goal time of a 6:30/mi pace. My training had been going well and this would be a fast race. I knew that this race attracted several fast women which would help push me closer to my goal time. I was hoping to be in the top 20.
Working hard! I am still heal striking…..ugh.
As soon as the race started, I knew that something wasn’t right. I watched the pack take off and I didn’t have the energy to stay close. It felt very different than my other races. I had to make the decision to go at a comfortable pace for me which was slower than my goal pace.
It turns out that I was coming down with a virus and that’s why I felt the lack of energy that I usually have. However, I remind myself of what a friend told me, “Not every race is going to be a PR.” It’s important to celebrate effort. And, on that particular day, I gave everything I had. Although slower than I had hoped, I managed to place in the top 20 and also won my age group.
